The fruit fly free area is the first and only free area in Brazil. The work began in at the end of the 1970s, when melons started being grown in the Mossoro region of the State of Rio Grande do Norte. Currently, all the melons produced in the region are monitored. The region’s relevance is such that it includes four important interest areas:
-
International pest-free dissemination area
-
Preservation of the environment
-
Food safety
-
Major reduction in chemical and/or biological waste
The Free Area is maintained by producers via COEX (Fruit-growing Committee of Rio Grande do Norte), which is responsible for coordinating and undertaking the monitoring process on farms and promoting actions with the bodies and agents involved in the program in the federal, state and municipal spheres.
